Stronger PHCs, faster ambulances, mental health top our agenda: Minister UT Khader
Bengaluru
Strengthening Primary Health Centres, ensuring ambulances reach patients within 15 to 20 minutes, expanding mental healthcare and integrating palliative care into the public health system are among the Karnataka government's key priorities, says Health Minister U T Khader. In his first exclusive interaction with News Trail after assuming office, Khader outlines his policy roadmap while urging citizens to adopt healthier lifestyles and preventive healthcare.
Q: What are your immediate priorities as Health Minister?
A: We want to build a stronger healthcare system from the grassroots. Every PHC must have adequate doctors, pharmacists, laboratory technicians and essential staff. We are also strengthening emergency services so ambulances can reach patients within 15 to 20 minutes, especially in rural areas. Our focus is on delivering timely and quality healthcare to every citizen.
Q: Why have you placed so much emphasis on mental health and palliative care?
A: Mental health deserves the same attention as physical health. Awareness should begin in schools, colleges and through the media so young people under stand it early. We are also working to make palliative care an integral part of health care because patients with terminal illnesses deserve dignity, comfort and compassionate support.
Q: What role will the private sector play?
A: Public-private partnerships can strengthen healthcare delivery, provided treatment remains affordable and accessible. Our responsibility is to ensure quality healthcare reaches every citizen, and collaboration can help us achieve that goal.
Q: What message do you have for the public?
A: Health is a shared responsibility. Go for a health check-up every six months, walk regularly, eat healthy and don't wait until illness strikes. Government hospitals offer several preventive healthcare services free of cost, but people must also take responsibility for their own well-being.
Q: Finally, what is your personal health mantra?
A: (Smiles) Peace of mind. No tension.
