This Gen Z creator transitioned from BCA to 'brain rot'
Bengaluru
Rohan Raj (@rohanrh1no on Instagram) is a Bengaluru-based digital content creator who has taken the local digital scene by storm, rapidly building a dedicated following of 44,600 on Instagram in just a few short months. With his roots in Magadi and his life firmly anchored in Bengaluru, he brings a unique blend of local Kannada heritage and urban youth culture to his content.Celebrated for his sharp, relatable humour, high-energy skits, and effortless bilingual delivery, Rohan continues to stand out as one of the most exciting fast-rising voices in the regional creator ecosystem.
Many hats, one dream
“I began posting videos online for fun last year, but I started creating content consistently only this year”, Rohan told News Trail in an exclusive interview about his journey. He studied Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) before completing an internship and later working with an event management company. He then joined a marketing agency as a creative strategist. However, he recently left his job to pursue acting full-time temporarily.Today, Rohan wears multiple hats as a content creator, freelancer, scriptwriter, marketer and aspiring actor.
He credits theatre and college cultural events for helping him overcome stage fright and camera shyness. “I was part of a comedy team called Gentlemen of Goli, and we performed many times. That's where I learnt a lot. I also did a lot of improv comedy, which has helped me immensely in content creation”, he said.Rohan shared that he started making content as a way to cope with the loss of his father, never expecting it to grow into the career and opportunities it has brought him today.
Gen Z Kannada
Rohan said he noticed a lack of Gen Z-focused Kannada content on Instagram and decided to fill that gap.“I saw that there wasn't much Kannada Gen Z content on Instagram. When I realised that videos in this genre were receiving a lot of attention, I decided to build my niche around it”, he said, adding that there were very few regional creators making ‘brain rot’ Gen Z style humour content in Kannada.
His initial videos featured direct Kannada translations of trending English songs and humorous literal Kannada translations of popular Gen Z terms such as ‘aura farming’. The unique concept quickly gained traction among young audiences across Karnataka.According to Rohan, the relatability of his content lies in its blend of pop culture and regional references, making it both familiar and entertaining for youth audiences.
“I experiment with different genres as well. Many creators think they can't follow trends because they don't match their niche, but I believe you can always adapt a trend to fit your niche”, he said.He also expressed happiness over the growing number of young Kannada content creators, calling it an encouraging sign for the regional creator ecosystem.
Big dreams ahead
Rohan hopes to cross the 100,000 follower mark on Instagram by the end of the year. He said content creation has also opened doors for him in the film industry."I'm grateful that content creation has given me the opportunity to step into the film industry. I've also been fortunate to receive guidance and support from many senior creators along the way, and I'm truly thankful for it", he said, adding that he is actively attending casting calls and pursuing acting opportunities.
He described his mother as one of his biggest supporters, saying she constantly motivates him. “I don't think I've seen her this happy in a long time”, he said. One of his proudest moments, he added, was buying her a Mysore silk sari with the money he earned through content creation.
Reflecting on his journey, Rohan said creators should focus on the process rather than financial rewards.“Content loses its value when the focus shifts only to money. I strongly believe the process is more important than the result. Just start creating. Nobody has everything figured out in the beginning - you learn along the way”, he advised.
