Bengaluru: Dandupalya, the name evokes fear as the place had gained notoriety nearly two decades ago due to the Dandupaya Gang which had carried out a series of murders, rapes, robberies, and dacoities between 1996 and 2001.

This village, off the Old Madras Road in Hosakote now has a medical college, an industrial area which houses many multinationals.

However, Dandupalya continues to remain jinxed. Men in the village find it difficult to get married, and those travelling to the village in buses, no copassenger dares to sit next to them. Even jobs are difficult for people from this village.

Recently a city resident has Tweeted the city police to check if it was fine to rent out his house to a 30-year-old man hailing from Dandupalya. Krishna Murthy, resident of Bengaluru south division police limits, had on Monday tweeted to the DGP of Karnataka along with the Bengaluru City Police and Police of South division.

In his tweet Murthy has stated that he had recently rented out his house and while checking the tenant’s Aadhar Card, he found out that the person is a resident of Dandupalya. He asked the police if it was fine to rent out his house to him

In its reply, the Bengaluru City Police has asked Murthy to visit his nearest police station and seek assistance. This Telugu speaking gang, who are basically wanderers, had settled down in Dandupalya as it was a remote village bordering the Bengaluru City. As they did not find any employment opportunities, they formed a gang consisting of 30 members both men and women, and started working in the construction sector.

They would roam around the city and pick their target. The women gang members, carrying babies, will approach the residents and ask for water. When the victim goes inside the kitchen, the male members would enter and commit brutal murders. They would later escape with the booty.

The gang has murdered nearly 75 people and more than 15 of the gang members were sentenced to death and some got life term. There are some films whose plots are drawn from the activities of the Dandupalya gang.
