Bengaluru: The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert on Friday as the city continues to be under a wet spell, and the winter chill has set in early this year.

As on Friday 8:30am, Bengaluru city has received 73.4 mm of rain this week, Bengaluru International Airport recorded 90.6mm and HAL Airport recorded 86 mm of rainfall.

Schools in Bengaluru urban and in some other districts in south Karnataka remained closed on Friday as a precautionary measure. Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner J. Manjunath has said the rainfall since October has exceeded the annual rainfall estimate by about 100 per cent.

“In the last seven days there is a 634 per cent increase. We used to receive 11 mm of rainfall in these seven days, but we have received almost 80 mm.”

According to the IMD Bengaluru, the city on Thursday received a total of 7.1 mm rain with the KIA recording 2.6mm, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (8.2mm) and Yelahanka (4.2mm).

600 families trapped

Civic authorities spent Friday morning surveying the damage of the previous day’s deluge. No lives were lost but 600 families remained trapped inside Kendriya Vihar in Yelahanka, where a storm water drain overflowed, sending water - and snakes - into their premises. A 50-yearold house in Halasuru collapsed and the BBMP has declared the neighbouring structures as being unfit for human habitation.
