Girls school compound overrun by parked cars

By Y. Maheshwara Reddy

Bengaluru: The compound of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Girls’ High School at Murphy Town has been converted into a parking lot for all types of vehicles by some affluent residents in the neighbourhood. As if this was not enough, some others are using the compound to spend their leisure time, thereby endangering the safety of girl students.

This correspondent visited the BBMP Girls High School premises on Saturday and found more than 10 four-wheelers, 20 two-wheelers and a few autorickshaws on the premises. It is believed the headmaster and teachers have already complained to Halasuru Traffic Police against illegal parking of vehicles on the school premises, but no action has been taken to clear the vehicles or penalise those who park these vehicles.

“I have assumed office as a Headmaster recently. I am told that the previous Headmaster had lodged complaints with Halasuru Traffic Police, but nothing has happened till date. I tried my best to prevent the people from parking their vehicles but they threatened me,” said Abdul Rahim, Head Master, BBMP Girls’ High School.

He said the number of admissions for this academic year has improved a lot. “The number of students has increased from 45 to 75 this year. I want the residents to clear their vehicles from this premises to ensure girl students enter school premises without any hurdles,” said the head master.

Lab faces seepage

Meanwhile, students are not able to use the well-equipped laboratory due to the seepage of water from the roof. The teachers have shifted all the equipment to the ground floor of the building to avoid damage.

According to teachers, the laboratory was established in association with Plan International, AkzoNobel, Disha Pari Udan Project.

When informed about the problems faced by the girl students, BBMP Special Commissioner for Education Reddy Shankar Babu assured to send education officials to the school. “I will fix the problem,” he said.
