A 46-year-old man and his two sons, who had kidnapped a 21-year-old student for a ransom of Rs 7 lakh, have been arrested by the Vidyaranyapura police in a swift operation. The victim is their neighbour and they kidnapped him, because his mother had refused to financially help the mastermind.

The main accused, G Ravi, is a cab driver by profession while his sons have been identified as R Madesh, 24, and R Srinivas, 20, all residents of Thindlu in Vidyaranyapura. The incident had happened on March 6.

One of Ravi’s sons was studying in the same class with the victim in a private college. Ravi had reportedly befriended the victim’s mother.

He had sought financial assistance from her to which she had refused. Frustrated over this Ravi kidnapped the student under the pretext of meeting him.

He was taken in a car from Teachers Layout in Vidyaranyapua towards Betthalli. From there they travelled towards Nelamangala and locked the victim at a deserted place.

“The victim initially managed to escape from the kidnappers. He even tried to reach his mother. But the gang caught hold of him and made him talk to his friend about the kidnap. The friend was made to pass on the message to the victim’s mother and also to tell the monetary demand of Rs 7 lakh,” said a police officer.

The message was also clear that they would be killing the student if she refused to pay them the ransom. The woman immediately alerted the police and filed a complaint.

The police managed to rescue the victim within 12 hours of the kidnapping. The victim’s mother told the gang that her other son will be arriving with the money. The police followed him and arrested the gang.

The police also found that the accused initially took the boy to a rehabilitation centre in Nelamangala for an admission, by claiming he was an alcohol addict. When they failed to get him admitted there, the gang then took him to an isolated place and assaulted him.

The victim’s father had passed away last year due to illness. The accused had found out that she was trying to sell a plot which was in her husband’s name. Further investigations are on.
