The mortal remains of medical student Naveen Shekarappa Gyangoudar, who died in shelling by Russian troops, are safely kept in a morgue in Ukraine and would be brought back to India once the situation improves, said Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai.
Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, the CM said heavy shelling was going on in Ukraine because of which it was not possible to bring back Naveen’s body to his hometown, Haveri till now. The body had been embalmed and kept in the morgue in an Ukraine hospital.
Once the war intensity reduces, officials of the Indian embassy in Ukraine have promised to send the mortal remains of Naveen to India. “We are making all efforts (to bring back the body) but it has not happened due to the raging war between Russia and Ukraine,’’ the CM said.
He also said he was in constant touch with External Affairs Minister Jaishankar and also officers of the Indian Embassy in Ukraine to know the ground reality. According to them, almost every Kannadigas living in different states in Ukraine has been successfully evacuated.
The government will not sit back till the body of Naveen is brought back and handed over to his parents, he added.
