A gruesome murder attempt was made on a 23-yearold pregnant woman by her live-in partner in Baiyappanahalli police station limits. The victim, who is a widow and mother of three children from her earlier marriage, was in a live-in relationship with the accused.

Upset over his alcoholism and constant pestering for money, the victim threatened to commit suicide by immolating herself. An enraged accused set her on fire after pouring diesel.

The woman is undergoing treatment at the burns ward of Victoria Hospital and the police have recorded her statement.

The police have identified the victim as Meena, a resident of Old Baiyappanahalli. She works as a house maid and her three daughters are said to be staying with their maternal grandparents.

Around seven years ago she married Vijaykanth and had three daughters. Vijaykanth is said to have died three years ago, and later she came in contact with the accused, identified as Babu, 37, a courier firm employee.

She is also in her third month of pregnancy. He is alleged to have been harassing her for money every day. On Wednesday, she is said to have threatened him to kill herself. The victim had saved some money she earned working as a maid.

“Why do you want to commit suicide, I will only kill you…..are the words of the accused according to her statement at the hospital. He is alleged to have pulled the stove from her and then poured diesel which was in the stove on her and set her on fire. While trying to escape he stumbled and broke his leg. The accused has been hospitalized,” a police officer said.

Unable to bear the pain, Meena cried for help. The neighbours rushed to her help and alerted the police. Babu then made an unsuccessful attempt to escape.

Babu is also alleged to have tortured Meena’s youngest two-and-a-half-year-old daughter by repeatedly biting her. The Baiyappanahalli police have registered a case and are further investigating.
