Sunilgouda of Congress, Pujar of BJP file nominations for MLC polls

Vijayapura: Candidates of the two leading parties, Congress and BJP filed their nomination papers for the coming MLC election from the local bodies’ constituency on Tuesday.
Sitting MLC Sunilgouda Patil of the Congress submitted his nomination papers and so did P.H. Pujar of the BJP and a former MLA in the presence of various party leaders. With this, it has become certain that the Vijayapura-Bagalkot MLC constituency which has two seats, will have only one candidate each of the national parties which is intended to ensure their victory.
While the BJP had announced the candidate a couple of days ago, the Congress announced the ticket Monday evening. The primary reason behind the delay in announcing candidate is said to be the confusion among senior leaders over candidate selection.
Both sitting MLCs S. R. Patil and Sunilgouda Patil were seeking the ticket to contest again but the Congress wanted to field only one candidate and took time to finalize the candidate. Finally, the party chose Sunilgouda over S. R. Patil which is said to have upset S. R. Patil.
