After missing the deadline for Bengaluru’s first double-decker flyover, the line from Jayadeva junction to Silk Board Junction in the city is finally nearing completion with civil work in full swing. Sources in Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) said civil work on the 2.2 km Road Bridge from Jayadeva to Silk Board will be completed by October 2022.

The road-cum-rail flyover where the lower deck will be used by vehicles and the top deck by Metro trains, will be one of the busiest stretches in the city and will be part of the Metro’s fully elevated RV Road–Bommasandra corridor (18.8km) in the Phase 2 project.

The lower deck has to be connected to loops and ramps which are under construction at Central Silk Board Junction. Sources said the major portion of the 19.5-km long RV RoadBommasandra Line (Yellow Line) of Bengaluru Metro will be open by December this year while a small portion will open in March 2023 due to a recent accident.

“The civil work on this stretch started in August, 2017 and now it is nearing completion. We expect it to be over by by this October. Once this is done, vehicular movement will become easier as internal work will then be taken up. Work on the remaining stretch will also be over by December. The stretch between Ragigudda temple and Silk Board will be a signal-free corridor.

The structure will cater to vehicles and the Metro is expected to decongest the stretch that sees severe traffic snarls during peak hours.

Four lanes of the elevated road and four lanes of the surface road will improve the situation” says a senior BMRCL official.

According to reports from BMRCL, the rail-cum-road flyover will rise to 31m, making it the highest in South India while similar structures are already in use in cities like Jaipur, Nagpur and Mumbai.

Also Silk Board will get two Metro stations which will be connected by a travelator and the distance between the two will reportedly be 355 metres. The RV Road-Bommasandra and Central Silk Board-KR Puram lines will criss-cross at the CSB junction.

People have been suffering a lot because of the delay in metro work. With the civil work set to get over, it will be big relief for commuters, says Arjun K, a regular commuter.
