Vijayapura Corporation provides shade to citizens through green tent experiment

With the mercury touching a scorching 40 degree Celsius, Vijayapura City Corporation (VCC) officials have found a novel idea to provide much needed shade especially at traffic junctions in the city.

City residents including two-wheeler riders are hesitant to venture out between 10 am and 6 pm due to the severe heat wave and for their convenience, the VCC has put up green tents at most traffic junctions to enable them escape the grueling heat at least for a few minutes.

Usually, the mercury crosses 40 degrees in districts like Ballari and Vijayapura in May but this year, many districts of North Karnataka are already in the grip of the heat wave. The authorities of VCC have put up green tents at Water Tank Circle, Gandhi Circle, Basaveshwara Circle and Central Bus Stand. The size of the tent varies from one place to the other depending on the length and breadth of the road. The green tent is fixed to a sufficient number of steel pipes so that it does not fly away in the strong breeze. The tents are expected to remain in place till June first or second week.
