Bengaluru: The Bangalore City University (BCU) said its association with the Spanish government will benefit a large number of students in the State.

According to the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed recently, the Spanish government will send a native teacher to the university to promote Spanish language and culture. The teacher will work with the Centre for Global Language at BCU.

BCU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lingaraja Gandhi, said there is a huge demand for Spanish language across the world. “Spanish is spoken in most parts of the world and therefore it helps in not only seeking a job but also in doing business,” he said.

The university will offer diploma, certificate and conversational courses in the language. The Centre for Global Languages at BCU offers 14 foreign languages, including Spanish, Japanese, German, Chinese and Korean.

Dr Jyothi Venkatesh, Chairperson of the Centre for Global Languages, BCU, said the availability of a native Spanish teacher will benefit students immensely.

“We feel a native teacher will introduce their country, the people and culture to our students. Learning a foreign language is like discovering the whole country, the people, tradition and culture. So a native teacher would certainly benefit the students and staff, it will be a very enriching experience for them,’ she said.

The Centre for Global Languages has been offering courses in Spanish language for the past 15 years. It has attracted many students as it focuses on employability.
