Mandya police on Saturday said that a Bangalore-based man had dumped his high-end BMW car in the Cauvery river, apparently distressed by mother’s death.
The car was a BMW X6, which cost Rs 1.3 crore. Observers added that the car now fished out of the river was towed back to Bengaluru by his family members.
The unusual event came to light when villagers and fisher folk near the historical Srirangapatna town in Mandya district noticed a large, bright red BMW floating in the Kaveri river. Frightened that the scene might be the result of a serious accident, they contacted the local police. Cops surveyed the scene and sent in divers to have a closer look at the car. The divers from the police department noticed that there was no one inside the car. After ascertaining that it was safe to do so, Mandya police fished out the four-wheeler with the help of a crane.
Police noticed that the number plate was intact. So they noted the registration details and upon contacting the transport department found out that the car belonged to a man who lived in Mahalakshmi layout in Bengaluru. They tracked down the owner, contacted him and asked him to come down to Srirangapatna to register a statement. Much to the surprise of the police personnel, they found the man, accompanied by family members, was incoherent. His family members said that he had been very disturbed and depressed ever since his mother died. So his kin surmised that he may have dumped the car into the river because he was overcome by grief. A sub-inspector from Mandya district confirmed that the man was let go after his statement was recorded. He said that the family has chosen to not register any complaint in the matter, adding there is no case to be pursued.
