Another acid attack in city

Nearly a month after a ghastly acid attack on a woman near Kamakshipalya, a similar attack took place near Sarakki Signal in Kumaraswamy Layout police station limits on Friday. The accused was arrested few hours after the incident. He has been identified as Ahmed, a resident of Goripalya. Sources also said that he is married, while the survivor is a divorcee and has a son.

Police said the survivor, who sustained an injury to her right eye and face, was initially taken to Vasan Eye Care for primary treatment and later shifted to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital. It was found that the accused had known the survivor for three years, as both of them were working at an agarbatti factory in the city.

The accused was in love with the woman and was forcing her to marry him, the police said, adding that she had declined his proposal. Deputy Commissioner of Police, South, Bengaluru, Harish Pandey said, “The accused was harassing the woman for many days because she rejected his marriage proposal. The two had an argument over the issue, a day before the incident.

On Friday morning, the accused brought diluted acid in a bottle along with him,” he said. However, the top cop also added that the woman is out of danger. “There is no threat to her life but her eye has been injured. Hopefully, she’ll recover soon. Nearly 70 per cent of the vision in her right eye has been restored,” he said.

According to sources, the incident took place around 9:30 am when the woman was on her way to work from Kumaraswamy Layout to JP Nagar via Sarakki signal. Ahmed again proposed to her to which the woman refused. A furious Ahmed then threw acid on her face and fled from the spot, police sources said. The police are interrogating the accused and further investigations are on.

In April, Nagesh, a spurned lover, had poured acid on a working woman for refusing his advances. The police had later arrested him in Tamil Nadu and shot him in the leg for attempting to escape. He was living near a temple disguised as a sage. In another incident, a miscreant from West Bengal had attacked his friend with acid during a quarrel in Cubbonpet.
