Bengaluru locals often complain of apathy on the part of civic authorities in addressing different issues. However, residents of Brookefield Layout near Marathahalli decided to take things into their own hands and get the necessary infrastructure built at their own expense. The locals have funded the construction of a storm-water drain as a solution to constant waterlogging and flooding in the area. On Wednesday, they tweeted images of the locality’s important road before and after the ‘kaluve’ was built. The tweet shows a location in Brookefield Layout flooded in May this year and another reportedly clicked on Tuesday, showing a clear road in spite of heavy rains. The cost of the drain was said to be shared by 20 individuals besides three associations. The move received mixed reactions from Twitter users. While most of them applauded the initiative, some expressed concern about the effect it might have on works in other areas. Almost all users who reacted to the tweet expressed disappointment at the BBMP’s failure to address the city’s burning issues. However, the Layout’s handle advocated the self-sustaining model of micro-managing civic issues and opined that it might reduce dependence on taxes
