As many as 40 villages in Srirangapatna and Pandapura taluks are facing a flood threat following release of 99,000 cusecs of water from the Krishna Raja Sagar Reservoir in Srirangapatna taluk of Mandya district due to heavy rains in Cauvery basin areas for the last one week.
This has forced the district authorities to shift the people living in low-lying areas of the river to safer places. The outflow of water from Kabini Reservoir stands at 38000 cusecs as against the inflow of 37370 cusecs.
In 2019, KRS authorities had released 1.64 lakh cusecs of water which had submerged several villages in the district. A similar situation prevails now with no letup in the rains in the catchment areas. A number of tourist centres and historic monuments are also facing a grave threat.
Famous tourist places like Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary, Paschima Vahini and Gosai Ghat are expected to get submerged. Even the 200-year-old Wellesley bridge is in danger.
The district authorities have imposed a ban on tourists spot visits along the Cauvery river. Meanwhile, Parashurama Temple, Mudighatta, 16 Kambada Mantap and other temples along River Kabini in the famous Nanjangud town are surrounded by flood water.
The taluk administration has asked people not to get into the river for bathing as the water level had breached the danger mark.
