City Traffic Police will henceforth impose fines on commuters parking vehicles and seeking shelter in underpasses in the city during heavy rains. Confirming the development, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Ravikanthe Gowda said that a fine of Rs 500 will be imposed on firsttime offenders and second time onwards Rs 1,000 will be levied.

“The move is being implemented due to recent accidents in underpasses in the city. In the last four months, there have been four accidents in underpasses. Generally, the underpasses will be dark and during rains, the visibility will be very low, which will result in accidents,” Gowda said.

The senior police officer urged people not to park vehicles in underpasses in view of their safety.

“We understand that people take shelter there because of the rain. But we request them it is not a problem if you park near some shops and seek shelter during the rains. But please do not park in underpasses as it is very risky,” the joint commissioner added.

The senior officer also said that it is the job of the BBMP to put up safe shelter for the motorists to seek shelter during the rain.
