Reflections on our beloved nation

NT Correspondent

Bengaluru: India, the world’s largest democracy, the land of yoga, spirituality, and a rich civilizational past, has one of the youngest demographics and is without a doubt an exciting place to be in the twenty-first century.

Our nation, at the same time, struggles with the rising gap between the rich and the poor, with ignorance, social unrest, and strained communal harmony.

One is always overwhelmed and bewildered by its contradictions, wondering at the many 'Indias' that coexist as an effervescent mix despite such unique diversity.

“As the country navigates its way into the new millennium, a question often asked is, ‘Are we moving in the right direction?’ Even more important is the question of who is qualified to comment, "asks Captain Gopinathan, the author of Our India.

As the founder of Air Deccan, he revolutionised air travel in India by enabling ordinary people to take to the skies. He is also a retired army man, an award-winning farmer, and an activist.

In Our India, the eclectic range of Captain Gopinath’s views on business, politics, governance, aviation, and society paints a comprehensive picture of an India that is reshaping every minute.

A discussion on his book will happen at BIC where he will be joined on stage by Gopalkrishna Gandhi, an author, diplomat and former Governor, WB, Uma Mahadevan Dasgupta, ACS Panchayat Raj, GoK, and S. Raghotham, Opinion Editor, Deccan Herald.

Those unaware of Capt Gopinathan’s achievements can watch Sorarai Potru, a biopic inspired by his life, which won critical acclaim and dominated this year’s National Film Awards, including Best Feature Film, Best Actor, and Best Actress.
