Flip-flop on milk prices; KMF increases, Bommai decreases

NT Correspondent

Bengaluru: There has been talk of milk and curd prices going up in the past few months because of rising input costs and so people were not unduly surprised when Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) which supplies the popular Nandini brand of milk, on Monday announced a not so modest increase in milk prices by Rs 3 per litre.Curd prices were also increased by the KMF by Rs 3 per litre.

With Assembly elections fast approaching in May, 2023, the last thing political parties including the ruling BJP would want is a hue and cry over rising prices and more particularly of something as essential as milk.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai was no doubt shocked and said any decision to increase prices or maintain the status quo will be taken only after November 20 in what is considered a rebuff for KMF officials.

Bommai told the media in Sedam in Kalaburagi district that "a decision on the hike in the prices of milk and milk products will be taken after a meeting with the KMF Chairman and other officials after November 20.'' This obviously means that there will be no hike till November 20 as announced by the KMF. It may not be effected so soon considering the coming Assembly polls.
