Punjabi woman assaulted for not speaking in Kannada

Bengaluru: A Punjab-based woman was allegedly abused and assaulted by a group of women near Vidyaranyapura for ‘not speaking in Kannada.’ The jurisdictional police said that the incident had taken place around 10 pm on Friday when the victim, a native of Ludhiana and a beautician, was riding towards her house.
A child reportedly crossed the road carelessly, forcing the woman to apply brakes to avoid a collision. The victim asked the child’s mother not to leave the child to roam free on the roads and be more attentive. This offended the child’s mother who started arguing with the victim and in a few minutes, a group of women gathered at the spot supporting the child’s mother.
The group allegedly abused the victim for her inability to speak in Kannada and reportedly asked her to go away from Karnataka, sources said. As the victim took out her mobile phone to record their abuses, women started assaulting her with plastic pipes.
A complaint was filed regarding the incident at the jurisdictional police station. The police claimed that they are scanning the CCTV visuals of the spot. However, no arrest has been made so far in connection to the assault.
