ATTUR WARD: Roads, garbage a pain point

  • 2022-07-04

Attur ward is located in the northern part of Bengaluru and comes under the Yelahanka zone. It is part of the Yelahanka Assembly Constituency and Chikkaballapur Parliamentary Constituency.

Attur (Ward 3) shares its eastern and southern boundaries with the BBMP wards of Chowdeshwari, Yelahanka Satellite Town Vidyaranyapura and Kuvempu Nagar. On the western side, it is surrounded by various Gram Panchayats like Ramagondanahalli, Veerasagara and Lakshmipura. Attur ward consists of Attur Layout, Chikkabettahalli, Doddabettahalli, Adityanagar, Akshayanagar, Sai Nagar and Muneshwara Layout.

The area’s population has seen a sharp rise in the last decade due to the rise of new layouts. The Attur Layout portion forms the core of the ward. The connecting roads of this area are relatively good. Most internal lanes of Attur Layout are in good shape except for those stretches which were dug up for repairs and maintenance work.

Large portions of the ward, outside the core Attur Layout area, still lack decent roads. Many roads across Ward 3 are being prepared for asphalting work. Residents complain that the work is slow and inefficient. Certain pockets of Ward 3, such as BHEL layout and Havyaka Nagar are in good shape. These are relatively new layouts, but have still managed to get good roads.

The area within Ward 3 that lies towards the north of Vidyaranyapura consists of two villages – Chikkabettahalli and Doddabettahalli. The villages had hillocks which became a source of stones for construction.

Continuous quarrying over decades took a toll on the hillock at Doddabettahalli. Another hillock at Chikkabettahalli has survived and has a temple on it, which is visited by some devotees during weekends. One of them said the place is hard to access as there are no roads. A compound wall has been constructed around the hillock, but the roads around are not motorable.

Chikkabettahalli also has a garbage issue. Heaps of household waste, that can be a potential health hazard, can be seen at street corners. Management of drains is also poor in the area. Roadside drains are old and clogged. Some drains were cleaned up but the silt and waste cleared from the drains lay in piles next to them without being cleared for months.

While some portions of the ward have water connection, the supply is not adequate according to the residents. Many residents in Chikkabettahalli do not have access to community borewells and taps. They draw water from old wells of the village and carry it home.

Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan Road is the arterial road that connects several areas of the Attur ward. It stretches from M S Palya circle to Yelahanka. This is the only road that is in good shape here. Roads of Chikkabettahalli are in a pathetic condition.

Many of the lanes here are very narrow as the area used to be a village. They were dug up by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board to lay drainage pipes. However, restoration of these stretches was to be carried out by the BBMP. On one hand, the BBMP has failed to restore the roads in Chikkabetahalli and, on the other, road development projects that were supposed to be taken up in the area remain unexecuted.

Interior roads of the layouts surrounding the village, such as Adityanagar, also need asphalting. Inconvenience is also being caused to residents of Adityanagar due to damaged roads after the laying of cables. “We are facing this hurdle every day. The situation worsens after rains. The road is full of sludge. Guests who visit our house prefer to park their vehicles on the main road and walk to our house,” a resident of Adityanagar said.

Roads along Attur Lake have been developed and maintained well, except for one black spot.
